One of the best writers living, Morrison's work combines poetry with prose, historical testimony with the supernatural, the specifics of the African-American experience with the universality of the human experience. She's a chronicler of the most brutal of crimes and a believer in love.
I've read a lot of her work, but still haven't read Jazz, Tar Baby, Love or Paradise. Must rectify that.

I totally agree with you that Toni Morrison is one of the best writers alive. Her work is such poetry that her stories (my most recent experience was with "A Mercy") can be slow. But the language is always so beautiful and the images so intricately woven that I don't want to turn the page too quickly.
ReplyDeleteI notice also that "In the Time of Butterflies" is in your library. This story is so well told and the characters so well drawn that it returns to my mind time and time again, even though it's two or three years since I read the novel.

"A Mercy" and "In The Time..." are most definitely two of the best books I've read in the past few years. Just breathtaking.
