American Pastoral by Roth, or the Grapes of Wrath, by this dude called Steinbeck?

    Go for the Steinbeck. It's so much more than a depressing tome.

    My experiences with Steinbeck have been, shall we say, disappointing, so I'd say go with Roth. He's one of my favorite living writers.
