Literary Birthday: Edgar Allan Poe

Actually, his birthday was yesterday, but I would be remiss in not giving old Edgar (who moved around so frequently there are like fifteen Poe sites here in NYC) a hearty EBC shout-out.

I live near a famous church and so when its bells toll, I quite frequently hear lines of his fabulously onomatopoeic poem, "The Bells," running through my head.

Readers, what is your favorite Poe story or poem?

Don't worry, you're not the only one who missed his birthday — the Poe Toaster failed to pay his tribute this year...
My favourite among Poe's stories is "Thou Art the Man" (from Tales of Mystery and Horror), although there are many more I love.

  2. I had honestly forgotten about Poe's birthday as well, and will add him to my website's calendar. Thanks for the info! :)

  3. For sentimental reasons, I will always love best the three tales that I remember my mother playing for me from LPs of Basil Rathbone reading Poe: The Black Cat, The Tale-Tell Heart, and The Cask of Amontillado. I was eight years old and these three stories with a common theme made quite an impression on my little, horrified brain. It's never too early to start your child on Edgar Allen Poe.

  4. Sniff. I like Sheridan Le Fanu better. Sniff. (I like to think the above comment was in true Poe style seeing as he was argumentive and contrary.)
