Frazzled Question of The Week: How's the Summer Reading Going?

Greetings, readers.

I am buried beneath two interesting but involved projects for two different news outlets right now, so I'm afraid posting will be light to nonexistent through the weekend. I'm bummed because my summer reading and writing projects are kind of stalled by said projects, but I'm hoping once the smoke clears on Friday they will be back on track... I may even get some time to plop in the sun with a book, hopefully The Glimpses of The Moon, a lesser, lighter, later Wharton novel which I'm absolutely entranced by.

How's your summer reading going? Read any surprising books? Immersed in junk beach-reads that have derailed your plans to conquer Proust? Or are you methodically checking the books off your summer list?

Share your tales below.

  1. My summer reading has been going pretty well. I don't really have a specific list of classics. It's really all about making a dent into the massive TBR pile. That being said I do feel compelled to re-read The Road before the movie comes out in the fall.

  2. I just started Alive in Necropolis which is a noir zombie cop novel set in SF (a best seller there) and I'm liking it so far. I started Drood but I think it's more of a winter book--I don't like lugging the hardback around with me. It might have to go back on the to-be-read shelf for now.

  3. I'm half-way through Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee. First novel I've read since Pale Fire by Nabokov in 2005.

  4. I've hit my low point for the week... at this point, I don't know if I'll ever get the time to read again. :-( Work-related angst, a writing project due tomorrow and not even 1/4 done, and I just want to SLEEP! But maybe over the weekend I'll get to pick up a book! So many waiting in the wings...

  5. I can't finish Little Dorrit. I'm about 50 pages from the end and I've lost the will to continue. I love it, but something about Dickens just isn't holding my attention this summer...

I've been reading more nonfiction than usual: a book on the Black Plague (The Great Mortality), a book about the five Best Picture nominess of the 1967 Academy Awards (Pictures at a Revolution). I want to get my hands on a good medieval history book (13th or 14th century, preferably not too academic) or something about the Plantagenets if anyone has a good recommendation...

I'm also reading The Remains of the Day, which is great.

I'm reading junk this summer, working my way through Jodi Picoult's novels. I don't care that her plots are kind of hackneyed; she comes up with compelling stories, writes great courtroom scenes, and throws in at least one good twist.

And really, I call her work "junk" but her novels are very well-researched and do a good job of exploring the ethical issues at hand. No, her novels will not be enduring classics, but they're still good, and they're a lot more complex and compelling than your typical beach reads.

  7. Just finished "Emily of New Moon" and I fell in love with it. I've read it many many times but this is the first time I really connected with Emily in a deep way. Wonderful feeling.
Working on "The Little Minister" by JM Barrie. It was one in a favorite series of dear old L.M. Montgomery's so I thought I'd give it a go. Forgot how intriguing Scots talk. It's a puzzling way of putting sentences together but I'm getting the hang of it. Really loving the flow of language when I'm clever enough to understand...
